YAM is particularly very useful for society. According to patanjali Yog sutra, there are five forms of Yam.

Ahimsa (Non-Violence):-

It connects non-Violence to all in word, deed and thought. It is a very difficult practice to follow. A weak person cannot observe it. Lack of this restraint in a person makes him a slave of many evils and perversities. Where Ahimsa is observed in letter and spirit, malice and hostility take to their heels.

Satya (Truth):-

A practitioner of truth is one who observes it in word, deed and thought. Truth means describing a thing or a person exactly as he sees or experiences. Practice of truth can be observed by a person who is healthy, strong – willed and endowed with a steady-intelligence, non – biased and of equanimous temperament. Besides, two essentials of truth must be noted with care: speak the truth melodiously, not bitterly, secondly, always speak the truth for the good of other people, a truth by which other people are benefited. Truth becomes meaningless if these two factors are absent. Real knowledge is attained only by the practice of truth. It also makes the style of our life simple and fearless.

Asteya (Non-Stealing):-

The meaning of Asteya is abstinence from stealing. Stealing is the act of making things one’s own unlawfully whereas it belongs to somebody else. In other words it means that one should acquire things by honest means and not by stealing, cheating or by resorting to dishonest and corrupt practices. Otherwise peace of mind can never be acquired.

Brahmchary (Celibacy):-

Means restraining sense organs from such activities, which might cause a lapse from countenance. Controlling of ones sense and mind in word, deed and thought is called Brahmchary, abstinence from looking at obscene objects, abstinence from listing to foul and futile talks with the ear, abstinence from smelling objects, emitting foul smell with the nose, abstinence from eating food at wrong times, in large quantities and of indigestible nature and of impure (tamasi) quality, abstinence from touching any person in such a manner as to make the mind restless is in reality celibacy. Semen is the source of all energy. Hence preserving of seminal energy and meditating on God constantly is real Brahmchary. Sadhna will make wonderful progress if continence is observed in the real sense of the word.

Aparigrah (Abstinence from Avariciousness)

Possession of wealth and property more than the basic need is Aparigrah. The person who does not abstain from this urge to possess more and more of comforts and luxuries of life falls into the trap of attachment and egoism. He gets enmeshed into the net of Maya (illusion). With the attainment of this quality all jewels of life fall into his lap. By observing this restrain, lot of time and energy is saved for Sadhna.
